2016 Executive Board

Editor-in-Chief: Darby Marx

darbyDarby is a junior in the College from Lower Merion, Pennsylvania majoring in the Biological Basis of Behavior and minoring in Bioethics and Chemistry. She first came across bioethics her freshman year and has since been fascinated with this relatively new, expanding field. What she enjoys most about studying bioethics is that it requires the integration of a broad spectrum of fields, including philosophy, politics, law, medicine, and biological research. As far as particular interests in bioethics, she is most intrigued by neuroethics, brain imaging, and the debate over euthanasia and physician assisted suicide. Outside of PBJ, Darby is involved in neuroblastoma research at CHOP and teaches neuroscience to local seventh graders. She can be reached at EIC@bioethicsjournal.com.

Managing Editor:  Jamie Atienza

Jamie is a junior in the College, double majoring in Biology and Health and Societies with a concentration in Public Health. Her interest in bioethics was sparked by an introductory bioethics course and she has been a part of PBJ since the beginning of her sophomore year. She enjoys the hard, yet essential questions that bioethics dares to ask and debate. She is particularly passionate about applying bioethics to guide doctor-patient relationships, public health policy, and clinical research. Outside of PBJ, she works in a lab at CHOP’s Comprehensive Bone Marrow Failure Center, is a Deputy Board member of the Penn Undergraduate Health Coalition, is a tutor for the West Philadelphia Tutoring Project, and is a proud member of the Penn Philippine Association.

Managing Editor: Claire Fishman

Claire is a sophomore from Fort Washington, Pennsylvania looking to major in Biological Basis of Behavior and Chemistry and minor in Hispanic Studies. She is now most passionate about the clinical implications of bioethics and hopes to become a doctor in the future. Outside of PBJ, Claire is a board member of the Penn chapter of the Foundation for International Medical Relief of Children, a member of Penn Women’s Biomedical Society, a brother of Alpha Phi Omega, and a research assistant in a Physiology Lab at the Perelman School of Medicine.

Rebecca GelferRebecca Gelfer is a freshman in the College pursuing a major in biochemistry and a masters in chemistry. She is from Houston, Texas and her interest in bioethics stems both from her experience in high school debate as well as an interest in medicine. She thinks it’s important to understand how bioethics can constrain and enhance medical advances. Aside from PBJ, she conducts research, is a board member of Penn for Youth Debate, and a member of the Penn Women in Biomedicine club.

Managing Editor: Pranav Reddy

Pranav is a freshman from Los Altos, California, majoring in Computer Science and Biochemistry. He joined PBJ in his first semester at Penn, discovered a way to continue his passion for ethics, fostered in high school debate, and combine it with a growing interest in medicine. Pranav is passionate about combatting global disparities in health care and the systems of power that create them. Outside of the PBJ, Pranav is a member of Penn for Youth Debate, a volunteer urban debate organization, and Network Against Malaria, which seeks to alleviate the impact of malaria in African nations.

Managing Editor: Rachel Shaw

Rachel is a junior from Cleveland, Ohio, studying bioengineering.  She joined PBJ Rachel Shawin her first semester at Penn, after discovering bioethics in high school and wanting to learn more.  After two years as an AE, Rachel loves reading new papers, talking about them, and understanding more about all of the things which constitute bioethics, and is looking forward to leading those discussions.

Outside of the Journal, Samip closely follows his hometown baseball team, the Texas Rangers, and enjoys reading the New York Times – check out its ethics section!

Managing Editor: Girish Valluru

girishGirish is a sophomore in the College and has spent his whole life in various parts of Pennsylvania. Entering Penn, he knew he would be focusing most of his time in science mainly in research and its corresponding medical applications. However, as he became more involved in research, he found himself wondering about many of the ethical implications of newly developing procedures and technologies. Exploring bioethics has allowed him new perspective on the effects of everything from bionics to genetic engineering for the common person. Among his other interests, he enjoys reading fiction, watching movies, and running.
